Xeljanz is a medication commonly prescribed to treat arthritis and is currently the subject of a mass tort litigation. Some of the most serious potential side effects of Xeljanz, including the possibility for blood clots, are not indicated on the warning label. Injured patients and their families have come together seeking compensation.
What Is Xeljanz?
Xeljanz (tofacitinib) is a medication that may be used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, as well as psoriatic arthritis. In most cases, doctors prescribe this medication to decrease pain, swelling, and tenderness in the joints. Some patients may also receive a prescription for Xeljanz if they have a bowel disease known as “ulcerative colitis.”
Xeljanz was first approved by the FDA in 2012. In 2018 sales of Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR totaled approximately $1.74 billion in the United States.
The State of the Xeljanz Litigation
Researchers discovered that Xeljanz causes a host of potentially serious symptoms and adverse reactions. As a result, the manufacturers of Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR have been forced to make significant changes to the medication’s label. For example, on July 30, 2019, the label was altered to reflect an association between these medications and an increased risk of sudden cardiovascular death. If Xeljanz increases the risk of sudden cardiovascular death, then it is possible this medication may increase the risk of other adverse cardiovascular events. The manufacturers also made significant changes to the dosing recommendations included on the labels for Xeljanz and Xeljanz XR.
It seems plausible that Pfizer is trying to protect itself by warning of new risks while simultaneously downplaying and/or misrepresenting the scope of these risks.
