Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has faced lawsuit after lawsuit across the country for years. The first suit was back in 2013 and the most recent in July of 2018 when the company was ordered to pay 22 women $4.69 billion in punitive and compensatory damages. These women claimed that J&J’s talc-based products contained asbestos that caused them to develop Ovarian cancer.

In the New Year, things are only looking gloomier for J&J as they are scheduled to face three times the amount of talc trails. The company faces a whopping 11,700 claims that its talcum powder products cause cancer.

The litigation, originally related to Ovarian cancer and brought on by women, is now being combined with emerging mesothelioma lawsuits, opening an entirely new area of mass tort litigation for J&J to defend.

According to Mass Tort Nexus, two recent verdicts point to J&J’s asbestos-contaminated talc being responsible for the development of mesothelioma.

A Los Angeles County jury awarded a man $18 million after finding that exposure to different talc-related cosmetic products at his father’s barbershop led to his mesothelioma.

Another Los Angeles jury awarded a woman $13 million for developing mesothelioma at the hands of J&J’s baby powder. One report indicated that there is evidence the talc contained 20% asbestos fibers.
